VIENNA, Austria – “I am lucky to have found out about my HIV-positive status before I was pregnant,” said Vuyiseka Dubula, secretary-general of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) in South Africa, a well-known AIDS advocacy group. Vuyiseka learned about her HIV status in 2001 when she was 22 years old. Her experience in navigating the health care system to get the medical care she needed was tough, and she knew it would only get worse when she sought antenatal services. (Source: UNFPA News)

Stories of Mothers Saved: African Mothers sending messages to Heads of States – 23 July 2010

By admin

It is no secret that in Africa, complications during pregnancy and childbirth are one of the leading causes of death for women of childbearing age. An unacceptable number of women die in pregnancy and childbirth each year, and for every woman who dies, at least 20 other suffer injuries, infections and disabilities. This is why maternal health is one of the key issues to be discussed by Heads of States at the 15th African Union Summit taking place in Uganda 19-27th July. (Source: UNFPA News)

Diagnosing Tubal Blockage After Tubal Ligation Reversal

By admin

A previous tubal ligation reversal patient expresses her concern about her HSG x-ray findings after her sterilization reversal. Her HSG suggests one fallopian tube is blocked after her reversal operation. It is always beneficial for the reversal patients of Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith to send them their HSG x-rays for a second opinion before making decisions about alternative fertility treatments. Occasionally, the HSG x-rays are inaccurate, fallopian tubes will really be open, and pregnancy can still be possible. (Source: Tubal Ligation Reversal News)

Pulmonary vascular and alveolar development in preterm lambs chronically colonized with Ureaplasma parvum

By admin

Ureaplasma species, the most commonly isolated microorganisms in women with chorioamnionitis, are associated with preterm delivery. Chorioamnionitis increases the risk and severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns. It is not known whether the timing of exposure to inflammation in utero is an important contributor to the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. We hypothesized that chronic inflammation would alter the pulmonary air space and vascular development after 70 days of exposure to infection. Pregnant ewes were given intra-amniotic injection of Ureaplasma parvum serovars 3 or 6 at low (2 x 104 cfu) or high doses (2 x 107 cfu) or media (controls) at 55 days gestational age. Fetuses were delivered at 125 days (term = 150 days). U. par…
