Correlates of ante- and postnatal depression in fathers: A systematic review

By admin

Conclusion: The scientific study of predictors of men’s depressive symptoms pre and post birth remains in its infancy. Changes in sleep quality, but not hormones predict time to postpartum depression recurrence

By admin

Abstract: Background: Poor sleep quality, dysregulation of hormones and increased inflammatory cytokines are all associated with the risk for postpartum major depression (PPMD). We evaluated change over time in sleep quality and hormones during the first 17 weeks postpartum, as well as a single cytokine measure, and their association with PPMD recurrence. Methods: Participants were pregnant women (N=56), with past histories of MDD/PPMD but not depressed in their current pregnancy. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and blood samples were collected 8 times during the first 17weeks postpartum. Estradiol, prolactin and cortisol, and a single measure of IL-6 were assayed. Recurrence was determined by two consecutive 21-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) scores≥15 and clin…

[Comment] Stillbirths: the professional organisations’ perspective

By admin

The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), the International Paediatric Association (IPA), and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) are well aware of the often forgotten issue of stillbirth, and recognise it as one of the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes worldwide—with about 2·6 million or more stillbirths happening every year. The explanation for many of these deaths is straightforward and terrible: all too often a trained health worker is not available when an expectant mother or woman in labour faces a situation endangering her baby’s life. Arguments In Favor Of Folic Acid For Everybody

By admin

Neural tube defects in neonates are common in Germany compared with the rest of Europe. Extensive folic acid fortification of foods in Germany might prevent these in 85-100% of cases, Wolfgang Herrmann and Rima Obeid argue in this issue of Deutsches Arzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2011; 108[15]; 249-54). A woman’s folic acid intake before and during early pregnancy ensures that the fetus does not develop the neural tube defect commonly known as spina bifida. Every year, 800 pregnancies in Germany are diagnosed with a neural tube defect. Most of those pregnancies are terminated… (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)
