I really need some help on how to deal with our daughter’s lack of effort on grades.
She is in 7th grade and suddenly doesn’t care about trying at all. She failed social studies the first quarter. For the second quarter, we tried to incent her to do better with a financial incentive and she failed social studies again. Actually she almost failed three classes that quarter but we grounded her at the end until she brought them up.
We started the new semester with a clean slate and made clear to her – in written form and verbally – that our household won’t tolerate D’s or F’s. As long as she has all her grades at C or above she has all her privileges – watching tv in her room, socializing with friends, her phone, ipod etc. But if they drop authomatic loss of all privileges; reintstated when they rise again.
She went about a week before completely blowing off several assignments and us grounding her. It’s been almost two weeks and now she is below a C in four classes – mostly for missing assignments; bad quiz grades because she doesn’t study.
She goes to tuturoing twice a week; has study hall; doesn’t have a learning disability (we had her tested). And now she basically told us she won’t try until we give her her phone back – that she does better when she has all her privileges.
Any advice? We want to make a stand and not give in on this grounding but I wondered if there is a point of diminished returns.

I was hoping to find some advice to help me ease with the typical toddler behaviors that my daughter has abruptly started displaying. My daughter who is 22 months was a very happy and easy going child until a few months ago when she started hitting my husband and I. At first it was just once in a while but now it has turned into huge tantrums that last sometimes up to an hour and happen multiple times a day. We have tried various approaches in hopes to stop the behavior without luck. She has a growing vocabulary and seems to understand somewhat what she is doing. Our first course of action when the hitting started was to remove her from what made her upset, tell her ”no hit” and sit her in ‘time-out’ to cool down. When she was calm she was to say sorry for hitting. This worked great for a few weeks. Now she will hit us, turn to us and say ”no hit”, point to the ‘time-out’ spot, say ‘’sorry” and continue to hit us. When we ignore the behavior she will continue to hit us in places that are likely to get our attention, such as the face. I am 7 months pregnant so she typically aims for my belly or pulls my hair for the desired attention. At this point it is very hard to ignore because the hitting can cause physical pain not to mention the emotional toll it is taking on me. The hitting occurs whenever she is told something she does not want to hear or asked to do something she does not want to do. I try to give her choices (ones that I am also comfortable with) throughout the day to foster her independence and to make life less of a power struggle. Is she craving more structure and boundaries or just being a typical toddler pulling on her parents strings? Within the last couple of weeks she has resorted to hitting family and friends when upset. I feel I must be doing something wrong for the behavior to get worse instead of better.

NPR reported last week that the rate of home birth has increased pretty dramatically in the last few years (up 25% between 2004 and 2009). It's still a very small percentage of the total births, less than 1%, but the increase is still notable.
Why the increase? NPR identified mothers' concerns about the record high c-section rate and liberal use of interventions as one driver of the increase. One of my (hospital) midwives suggested that the lack of access to VBAC was driving more moms to birth at home. And when I interviewed Jennifer Block, the author of Pushed, for a podcast on the Motherlove Blog she attributed part of the increase to the Ricki Lake movie, The Business of Being Born.
In any case, when I heard that piece it occurred to me that, while I've posted many polls, I've never asked you where you birthed. So below is a poll asking just that. You can vote more than once if you've had more thanone baby. Me? 2 hospital births.
